How to Get Your Address

Follow these steps in order. Each step must be completed before proceeding to the next.

Get a Driveway / Access Permit

A driveway or access permit is required from the appropriate jurisdiction before an address can be assigned.

For driveways accessing a Town road, applications are submitted through the Permits page.
For driveways accessing a County highway (CTH W, J, or O), contact the Vilas County Highway Department at (715) 479-4641.
For driveways accessing a state or federal highway, contact the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Existing driveway? A new permit may not be required. Contact the Town Clerk at (715) 686-2123 to confirm.

Obtain a County Zoning Permit

Vilas County does not address vacant land. A structure or sanitary zoning permit is required before an address can be assigned — this demonstrates your intent to develop the property. Permits are issued through the Vilas County Zoning Department.

Before your address application is submitted, make sure the location of your driveway is clearly identified where it intersects the named road. The Town of Winchester will perform your fire number sign installation after the address is assigned, so the driveway must be easy to locate.

Some examples are: a wooden stake, a section of PVC pipe painted bright orange, or a stake with surveyor's flagging tape.
